Founded in 2008, Noor Al Barakeh addresses the lack of accessible spaces and employment opportunities for people with disabilities in Jordan. It creates a space for interaction, arts, growth, and support, including people with disabilities as active participants in society. The initiative operates in a park in Rabieh, Amman, containing an accessible garden and a multipurpose space.
The association began when mothers of children with disabilities came together to create activities in agriculture, arts, and recreation. They formed an agreement with Greater Amman Municipality to renovate a neglected public park, equipping it with spaces to host the weekly Nour al Barakeh farmer’s market to generate income for the initiative, while running cultural, sports, and educational workshops for youth with disabilities.
Through its programming, the project creates inclusive space for individuals with disabilities where they can join in tailored programs, while also building a community around local produce. Their plans include a library and café to provide employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
