The football league began in 2012 spontaneously, out of a shared love of football and a lack of accessible, inclusive, and well-maintained sports fields in Amman, particularly for the immigrant and refugee community. The league developed organically, on an empty plot opposite Bait al Rumman in Jabal Amman, where youth and boys from the migrant communities in the area began gathering for evening matches. Over time, they shared the space with Egyptian players on Fridays and gradually attracted other players and formed teams that included Somalis, Yemenis, Sudanese, and Nigerians.
With time, the games became more organised and competitive, the good players became captains, and the matches evolved into a weekly neighbourhood event attracting families and spectators. A Facebook page helped coordinate teams, schedules, and scores. The league was self-organised, and active for ten years, creating a cross-cultural and intergenerational space for the community. The league no longer exists, and was particularly affected by various dynamics which control the space they used.
