makāna is a research action collective based in Amman. We came together as a group of architects, planners, designers and researchers who felt a shared, strong sense of responsibility towards our local context. We are committed to working towards social and spatial justice, through collective power, dialogue and creativity.
Our Mission
makāna's mission is to champion the right to city-making in Jordan. We aim to induce and nurture dialogue, work amongst communities, and co-create urban spaces that reflect the needs and aspirations of the public. makāna seeks to drive real systemic change and transformation, creating a more just and inclusive urban landscape for all.
Our Values
We are guided by the values of inclusivity, justice, collective social empowerment, and ethics of care. We oppose traditional, top-down, neoliberal approaches to city-making, and work to build bridges between diverse grassroots initiatives while dismantling institutional barriers. Our commitment is to the creation of an inclusive and equitable urban environment, driven by feelings of belonging, ownership, joy, and empathy.
